Setting Up Gmail Notifications On Your Android Phone

This guide shows you how to:

  • Install the Gmail app on your Android phone
  • Sign into your Abbie notification email account
  • Set up notifications so your phone dings only for callback alerts

This keeps notifications meaningful without becoming a distraction.

Why Use a Dedicated Gmail Account?

Many clients use a separate Gmail account just for Abbie notifications.

This keeps:

  • Business alerts separate from personal email
  • Important notifications easy to recognize
  • Your phone from buzzing all day

If you haven’t created this email yet, do that first.

Step 1: Install the Gmail App

  • Open the Google Play Store
  • Search for “Gmail”
  • Tap “Install”
  • Once installed, open the Gmail app.

Step 2: Sign Into Your Notification Email Account

  • Open the Gmail app
  • Tap “Add an email address”
  • Choose “Google”
  • Sign in using the email address you created for your Abbie notifications

You should now see the inbox for that account.

Step 3: Allow Notifications on Android

Android manages notifications both inside Gmail and at the system level.

First, confirm Gmail notifications are allowed:

Open Settings on your phone

  • Tap “Notifications”
  • Tap “App notifications”
  • Select “Gmail”
  • Make sure notifications are ON

Step 4: Set Gmail to Notify Only for Important Emails (Abbie related)

Now we’ll configure Gmail so it dings only for important messages.

  • Open the Gmail app
  • Tap the menu icon (three lines)
  • Scroll down and tap “Settings”
  • Tap your “Abbie notification email account”
  • Tap “Notifications”
  • Select “High priority only”

This limits alerts to emails Gmail considers important.

Step 5: Create a Filter for Callback Notifications

This step ensures callback notifications are marked as important.

This is best done on a computer.

  • Open Gmail in a web browser
  • Go to “Settings” then “See all settings”
  • Click “Filters and blocked addresses”
  • Click “Create a new filter”

Use filter criteria such as:

  • Words like “callback”, “appointment”, or “new call”
  • Or the sender email used by Abbie notifications

Click Create filter, then:

  • Check Mark as important
  • Optional) Apply a label like “Abbie Callback”
  • Save the filter.

Step 6: Verify Android Notification Channels (Important)

Some Android phones use notification categories.

To confirm alerts will ding:

  • Open “Settings”
  • Tap “Notifications”
  • Tap “Gmail”
  • Tap “Notification categories” (or similar wording)
  • Make sure “Important Mail” is enabled and set to make sound

This step ensures audible alerts are allowed.

Step 7: Test the Notification

To confirm everything works:

  • Make a test call to your version of abbie that triggers a callback notification
  • Watch your phone

You should hear a ding when the callback email arrives.

If you don’t hear the ding:

  • Confirm that notifications are enabled
  • Confirm the message was marked important
  • Check that the correct Gmail account is selected

Recommended Daily Use

Most clients:

  • Leave Gmail installed
  • Let only callback notifications ding
  • Ignore the app unless an alert arrives

This keeps interruptions low and response time fast.

What This Does Not Affect

This setup:

  • Does not affect dashboard alerts
  • Does not change how Abbie works
  • Can be adjusted or disabled anytime
